Formula
How the calculation works
The calculator multiplies the number of rooms by the points planned in each room to get the total points.
It multiplies those points by the average metres of wire run per point to get the total length of wire needed.
The wire cost is found from the rate per metre and the switch and labour charges are added to give the total.
Common mistakes
- Counting only light points and forgetting the fan, socket and switch board points, which add a lot of extra wire.
- Using a short wire estimate per point, since wire often has to travel down walls and across the ceiling to the board.
When to use it
- Homeowners use it to budget the wiring of a new flat before calling an electrician for a firm estimate.
- Electricians use it to prepare a material list of wire, switches and boards so nothing is bought short on site.
Worked example
For 3 rooms with 4 points each there are 12 points, at 8 metres per point the wire is 96 metres, at 25 taka per metre the wire costs 2400 taka, and with 1200 taka switches and 3000 taka labour the total is 6600 taka.
Common questions
What counts as one wiring point?
A point is one light, fan, socket or switch outlet that needs wire run to it, so a room usually has four to six points including the sockets.
