How the calculation works
Each panel's area in square feet is its width times height in inches divided by 144, the number of square inches in a square foot.
Multiplying by the panel count and adding wastage gives the total glass area to buy.
The cost is that area times the rate, so both the count and the wastage move the final figure.
Common mistakes
- Entering dimensions in feet where the tool expects inches, which throws the area off by a factor of 144.
- Forgetting that glass is cut to size, so offcuts on a small order can be a large share of the bill.
When to use it
- Use it to price window or partition glass before placing an order.
- It is not a fabrication quote; toughening, holes and edges are charged separately.
Worked example
Six panels of 48 by 36 inches at 120 per sq ft with 5% wastage come to 75.6 sq ft and 9,072.

How do I convert inches to square feet for glass?
Multiply width by height in inches and divide by 144 to get square feet per panel.
Does thicker glass cost more per square foot?
Yes, 8 mm and 10 mm glass cost more than 5 mm, and toughening adds another charge.
