Formula

wetVolumeFt3 = area * thickness/12; dryVolumeFt3 = wetVolumeFt3 * 1.33 * (1 + wastagePct/100); cementFt3 = dryVolumeFt3 * cementPart/totalParts; cementBags = cementFt3/1.226; sandFt3 = dryVolumeFt3 * sandPart/totalParts; cementCost = cementBags * cementBagPrice; sandCost = sandFt3 * sandPricePerFt3; totalCost = cementCost + sandCost

How the calculation works

The wet volume is the area times the thickness, and a dry-volume factor of 1.33 accounts for the voids that fill when sand and cement mix.

The dry volume is split between cement and sand by the mix ratio, and wastage is added on top.

Cement is converted to bags and sand priced by volume, and the two costs added give the material total.

Common mistakes

When to use it

Worked example

100 sq ft at 0.5 in thickness in a 1:4 mix with 5% wastage uses 0.95 cement bags and 4.65 cu ft sand, costing about 731.55.

Wet volume 4.17
Dry volume 5.82
Cement bags 1
Sand volume (cu ft) 4.66
Cement cost 522.07
Sand cost 209.48
Total cost ৳731.55

Common questions

Why is the dry volume larger than the wet volume?

Cement and sand are bought dry, and the 1.33 factor plus wastage restores the quantity you must buy.

Which mix is best for walls?

1:4 is common for external walls and 1:6 for internal plaster.
