Figures are computed on your device; nothing is sent anywhere.

Formula

needed = age band target; debtPerNight = max(needed - actualHours, 0); totalDebt = debtPerNight * nights

How the calculation works

The tool sets the nightly target from your age band, since children, teens, adults and seniors need different amounts of sleep.

The debt per night is the target minus the hours you actually sleep, and it never goes below zero because oversleeping is not counted as credit.

An adult target of 8 hours against 6 hours actually slept gives 2 hours of debt a night, which is 14 hours across a week.

Common mistakes

When to use it

Worked example

An adult needing 8 hours who sleeps 6 hours builds 2 hours of debt a night, which is 14 hours over a week.

Target pot 8.00
Sleep debt/night 2.00
Total sleep debt 14.00

Common questions

Can a long weekend sleep repay the whole debt?

No. A single long sleep helps but rarely clears a large accumulated debt, so steady nightly sleep is the reliable way to close the gap.
