Formula
How the calculation works
Enter the number of steps you walked, your body weight and your average stride length in centimetres.
The tool applies the walking energy factor of 0.04 calories per step per 70 kg, scaling it to your actual weight.
It also multiplies steps by stride length to give the distance covered in kilometres.
Common mistakes
- Using the same calorie figure for walking and running, because running burns far more energy per step than walking.
- Ignoring that the formula is an average, since weight, pace, incline and fitness all shift the true calorie burn either way.
When to use it
- Use it to see how many calories a walk really adds when you are counting energy for weight management.
- Use it to turn your daily step count into distance so you can plan routes of a known length.
Worked example
Walking 10,000 steps at a body weight of 70 kg burns about 400 calories, since 10,000 times 0.04 times 70 divided by 70 is 400. With a stride of 70 cm those steps cover about 7 km.
Common questions
How many calories do 10,000 steps burn?
For a 70 kg person, 10,000 steps burn about 400 calories, and the figure rises roughly in proportion with body weight.
