Figures are computed on your device; nothing is sent anywhere.

Formula

floorArea = roomLength * roomWidth; floorTiles = Math.ceil(floorArea / tileArea * (1 + wastage / 100)); skirtingTiles = Math.ceil(skirtingLengthFt / tileLengthFt); totalTiles = floorTiles + skirtingTiles

How the calculation works

The calculator multiplies the room length by the room width to get the floor area in square feet.

It divides that area by the area of one tile, adds the wastage allowance and rounds up to a whole tile.

Skirting tiles are worked out separately from the wall perimeter divided by the tile length and added to the floor count.

Common mistakes

When to use it

Worked example

For a room 12 feet by 10 feet with 2 foot tiles and 10 percent wastage, the floor area is 120 square feet, the floor tiles are 33, the skirting over 40 feet needs 20 tiles and the total is 53 tiles.

Floor area 120.00
Floor tiles 33
Skirting tiles 20
Total tiles 53

Common questions

Why round up the tile count?

Tiles are sold whole, so the count is rounded up and a wastage margin added, otherwise a partly cut row at the edge cannot be finished.
