Formula
How the calculation works
Each pace has a MET value: slow is 2.8, moderate 3.5, brisk 4.3 and very brisk 5.0.
The calories are the MET times your weight times the hours walked.
A faster pace or a longer walk raises the burn, and a heavier body burns more for the same walk.
Common mistakes
- Using a brisk MET for a stroll, which overstates the burn.
- Forgetting that the number is an estimate, not a measurement of your body.
When to use it
- Use it to estimate the calories a walk burns at your chosen pace.
- It is not medical advice; it is a standard estimate for a healthy adult.
Worked example
A 60 kg person walking briskly for 45 minutes burns 4.3 times 60 times 0.75, which is 193.5 calories.
Common questions
What is a MET value?
A MET measures how intense an activity is compared with sitting still, and walking pace decides the number used.
Does weight really change the burn?
Yes, a heavier body does more work for the same walk, so the calories rise in direct proportion to weight.
