How the calculation works
Hong Kong MPF is defined by two thresholds more than by the rate: income below the minimum is exempt for the employee, and income above the maximum is capped for both sides.
That cap means a high earner and someone on 30,000 HKD pay exactly the same mandatory amount, which surprises many people new to the system.
The employer must contribute even when the employee is below the minimum, so the employer share is never zero for an eligible employee.
Common mistakes
- Applying the 5 percent rate to the full salary ignores the maximum relevant income cap and overstates the contribution for higher earners.
- Charging the employee share to someone below the minimum threshold is wrong, because that employee is exempt from the mandatory contribution.
When to use it
- Use it to check a Hong Kong payslip, since the MPF lines should match 5 percent of relevant income and never exceed 1,500 HKD per side.
- Use it before accepting a salary above 30,000 HKD, because extra pay above that level does not raise the mandatory MPF and so boosts take-home more than expected.
Worked example
On a monthly income of 28,500 HKD, both the employee and employer contribute 5 percent, giving 1,425 HKD each and a total of 2,850 HKD, below the 1,500 HKD per-side cap.
Common questions
What happens to MPF when income is above the maximum threshold?
Relevant income is capped at the maximum, so both sides contribute 5 percent of that cap only, which is 1,500 HKD each per month.
