Figures are computed on your device; nothing is sent anywhere.

Formula

points from age, BMI, waist, family history, activity; score = sum of points; risk band from total score

How the calculation works

The calculator assigns points for each risk factor using cut offs for age, BMI, waist, family history and activity.

It adds the points together to give a single risk score between about zero and twenty.

That score is mapped to a band from low through slightly elevated and moderate to high and very high.

Common mistakes

When to use it

Worked example

Age 45 adds 2 points, BMI 27 adds 1, a waist of 90 cm adds 3, a first degree relative adds 5 and no daily activity adds 2, giving a score of 13, in the moderate band.

Score 9.00
Risk band High

Common questions

Can I use this instead of a blood test?

No, this score only estimates risk, and only a fasting glucose or HbA1c blood test can actually diagnose diabetes.
