How the calculation works
The percentage is the marks obtained divided by the total, times one hundred.
The pass mark is the total times the pass percentage, and the marks needed are that pass mark minus what you have.
If you already have enough, the marks needed is zero rather than a negative number.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting that the pass percentage applies to the total, not to the marks you already have.
- Reading a percentage below the pass mark as a fail when the required marks are zero only if you already passed.
When to use it
- Use it to find your current percentage and the marks still needed to pass.
- It is not a grade conversion; it works with the pass percentage you enter.
Worked example
35 out of 100 with a 40 percent pass mark means 5 more marks are needed and the current score is 35 percent.
