How the calculation works
The total is the sum of the four recurring costs a hostel student faces, so no single category is missed in the monthly picture.
Rent is the room charge, food is the mess or dining cost, utilities cover electricity, water and internet, and other catches laundry, transport and mobile data.
For the sample figures of 3,000 plus 3,500 plus 500 plus 500 taka the monthly hostel cost comes to 7,500 taka.
Common mistakes
- Looking only at the room rent hides food and utility charges that can easily add half again to the real monthly cost.
- Forgetting one-time costs like the security deposit or admission charge understates the first month, so budget those separately from the recurring total.
When to use it
- Use it before moving into a hostel so you can compare the full monthly cost against renting a shared flat.
- Use it to set a monthly budget that already covers food and utilities, not just the headline rent.
