Figures are computed on your device; nothing is sent anywhere.

Formula

average = (listening + reading + writing + speaking) / 4; overallBand = nearest half band

How the calculation works

Enter each of the four section bands between 0 and 9 exactly as shown on your score report.

The tool adds the four bands and divides the sum by four to get the raw average.

It then applies the official IELTS rounding rule, where an average ending in .25 goes up to .5 and one ending in .75 goes up to the next whole band.

When to use it

Worked example

With listening 7.5, reading 7.0, writing 6.0 and speaking 6.5, the total is 27.0, the average is 6.75 and the overall band rounds up to 7.0.

Average 6.38
Overall band 6.50

Common questions

Does a 6.75 average give an overall band of 7.0?

Yes, IELTS rounds the average to the nearest half band and .75 rounds up, so 6.75 becomes 7.0.
