Formula

fuelLiters = loadKw * hours * litersPerKwh; fuelCost = fuelLiters * fuelPrice

How the calculation works

Enter the electrical load in kilowatts that the generator will carry, which is the sum of the appliances running at once.

Enter the running hours and the fuel the generator uses per kilowatt-hour, which for a small diesel set is often around a third of a litre.

The tool multiplies load, hours and fuel per kWh to get the litres and then multiplies by the fuel price to get the total cost.

Common mistakes

When to use it

Worked example

A 5 kW load running 8 hours at 0.35 litres per kWh with fuel at 110 Taka a litre uses about 14 litres and costs about 1540 Taka.

Fuel (litres) 14.00
Fuel cost ৳1,540.00

Common questions

Does the estimate include the fuel used while starting?

No, it covers steady running only, so add a small amount for starting and idle time if the generator runs many short sessions a day.
