Formula

How the calculation works

Each course contributes its credits times its grade point, giving weighted points.

Adding those and dividing by the total credits gives the CGPA.

Because it is credit-weighted, a high grade in a three-credit course matters more than in a one-credit course.

Common mistakes

When to use it

Worked example

Grades 4.0, 3.5 and 3.0 in courses of 3, 3 and 2 credits give a CGPA of 3.56.

CGPA 3.6

Common questions

How is CGPA different from a simple average?

Each grade is weighted by its credit hours, so a big course moves the CGPA more.

Can I use this for university results?

Yes, it is the standard credit-weighted formula most universities use.
