How the calculation works
The calculator first works out how much of the final grade the current marks already lock in, using the remaining weight.
It then finds how many marks are still missing between that locked portion and your target overall percentage.
Dividing the missing marks by the final's weight gives the score you must earn on the remaining work.
Common mistakes
- Entering the weight as the current score, which swaps the two figures and gives a meaningless result.
- Ignoring that a needed grade above 100% is impossible, since no exam score can exceed the maximum.
When to use it
- Use it after midterms to see exactly what final exam score keeps your target grade within reach.
- Use it to decide whether to aim for a higher target or shift effort to other courses instead.
Worked example
Current 75%, final worth 40%, target 80%: you need 87.5% on the final, which is possible.
Common questions
What if the needed grade is over 100%?
The result is flagged as not possible, because no score can exceed 100%, so the target overall grade cannot be reached this time.
