Formula

bmi = weightKg / (heightCm / 100)^2; targetGain range from BMI category (single or twin)

How the calculation works

Enter your weight just before pregnancy, your height and whether you are expecting one baby or twins.

The tool computes your pre-pregnancy BMI and places you in the underweight, normal, overweight or obese category.

It then shows the total gain range recommended for that category, based on the Institute of Medicine guidance used worldwide.

When to use it

Worked example

A pre-pregnancy weight of 55 kg and a height of 160 cm give a BMI of about 21.5, which is in the normal range, so the recommended total gain for a single baby is about 11.5 to 16 kg.

BMI 21.5
Category Normal
Min gain (kg) 11.5
Max gain (kg) 16.0
Weekly gain (g) 400.00

Common questions
