Formula

total gain range by pre-pregnancy BMI: under 18.5 = 12.5 to 18 kg; 18.5 to 24.9 = 11.5 to 16 kg; 25 to 29.9 = 7 to 11.5 kg; 30 or more = 5 to 9 kg; weeklyRateKg = portion of the range for the trimester (about 0.2 kg in the first, then the band rate in the second and third)

How the calculation works

The tool reads your pre-pregnancy BMI and places it in one of four bands, from underweight to obese.

It returns the total weight gain range that medical guidance sets for that band over the whole pregnancy.

It also gives a weekly rate drawn from that range, with only a small gain expected in the first trimester.

Common mistakes

When to use it

Worked example

A pre-pregnancy BMI of 22 falls in the normal band, so the healthy total gain is 11.5 to 16 kg, at a weekly rate of about 0.4 kg in the later months.

Low end of range 11.50
High end of range 16.00
Weekly gain rate 0.42

Common questions

Why is the target based on BMI and not on a single weight?

Healthy gain depends on your starting body size, so a lower BMI band allows more gain and a higher band allows less.
