Formula

cgpa = sum(credit * gradePoint) / sum(credit); totalPoints = sum(credit * gradePoint)

How the calculation works

Each course contributes its grade point multiplied by its credit hours, so a three credit course counts more than a two credit one.

Those weighted values are added to give the total points, and dividing by the sum of all credits gives the CGPA for the semester.

For credits 3, 3 and 2 with grade points 4.0, 3.5 and 3.0 the weighted total is 29.0 over 8 credits, a CGPA of 3.63.

When to use it

Worked example

Courses with credits 3, 3 and 2 and grade points 4.0, 3.5 and 3.0 give a semester CGPA of 3.63.

CGPA 3.6
Total points 28.50

Common questions

Why do credit hours matter in CGPA?

Credit hours are the weight of each course, so a three credit course with a strong grade raises the CGPA far more than a one or two credit course with the same grade.
