How the calculation works
The tool adds the rent, food, transport, books, mobile and other amounts into one monthly expense figure.
It subtracts that total from your monthly income or allowance to get the amount left over.
The leftover is returned as is, so a negative number shows you are spending more than you receive.
Common mistakes
- Leaving out irregular costs such as exam fees and clothes, which then appear as a sudden monthly shortfall.
- Budgeting the allowance as if it arrives on the first day, when many students receive it in two or three parts.
When to use it
- See at the start of the month whether your allowance will cover all your regular student costs.
- Find the biggest expense line when the leftover turns negative and you need to cut something.
Worked example
A student with 15000 taka income spending 5000 on rent, 4000 on food, 1500 on transport, 1000 on books, 500 on mobile and 800 on other has 2200 taka left each month.
Common questions
What if the leftover comes out negative?
A negative leftover means expenses are above income, so trim the largest line or add tutoring income to close the gap.
