Figures are computed on your device; nothing is sent anywhere.

Formula

vo2max = 15.3 * maxHr / restingHr; fitnessLevel is banded from the result and age

How the calculation works

The calculator multiplies the maximum heart rate by 15.3 and divides by the resting heart rate.

It then compares the result with the fitness band for your age group to describe your level.

A maximum rate of 190 over a resting rate of 60 gives a VO2 max of 48.45, an excellent level at age 25.

When to use it

Worked example

With a maximum heart rate of 190 beats a minute and a resting rate of 60, the VO2 max is 48.45, which is excellent for someone aged 25.

VO2max 48.50
Fitness level excellent

Common questions

How accurate is the Uth-Sorensen estimate?

It is a field estimate based on the heart rate ratio, so it is useful for tracking trends but less precise than a lab test with gas analysis.
