Formula

ratio = waist / hip

How the calculation works

Enter your waist circumference measured at the narrowest point and your hip circumference at the widest point, both in centimetres.

Choose your sex, because the healthy threshold differs: 0.90 for men and 0.85 for women under World Health Organization guidance.

The tool divides waist by hip to give the ratio and labels it low or high risk against that threshold.

Common mistakes

When to use it

Worked example

A waist of 85 cm and hips of 100 cm give a ratio of 0.85, which stays below the 0.90 high-risk threshold for men, so the risk level is low.

Ratio 0.85
Risk level Low

Common questions

What waist-to-hip ratio is considered healthy?

A ratio of 0.90 or below for men and 0.85 or below for women is generally low risk, while higher values point to central obesity.
